How we help our community

Members cleaning up a streamOur club has numerous service projects each month to give our members multiple opportunities to help our community. Our projects vary from month to month based on what causes our members are interested in supporting, but we do have on-going projects with a few organizations that we work with.

Adopt a Highway

We have adopted a 2 mile section of Haycock Road in Fairfax County running from West Falls Church Metro to Haycock Elementary School. We hold roadside cleanups for our adopted street four times a year usually on weekend mornings. The Adopt a Highway program’s mission is to provide a cleaner environment for everyone to live in. Kiwanis ONE Day/Clemyjontri Park

This is our club’s most popular and largest single day service project we hold each year in early April. Working with the Fairfax County Park Authority, the club mobilizes a large group of volunteers from our service leadership programs and other Kiwanis club to undertake large scale landscaping and beautification projects to help maintain Clemyjontri Park. The club holds the event on Kiwanis ONE Day which is a day Kiwanis International sets aside for all members of the Kiwanis family to do service and fellowship together. Clemyjontri Park is the largest playground in the greater Washington DC area for children with disabilities. Ronald McDonald House

We have been volunteering at the Northern Virginia Ronald McDonald House adjacent to the INOVA Hospital for Children for many years. We have provided cleaning services, lawn maintenance services, and interior decorating services, such as painting a mural in the play room for this Ronald McDonald House. We also regularly visit the house to cook dinner for all the guests staying there. Ronald McDonald Houses are a place for families to stay for a care-free home environment while their children are undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital. Wreaths Across America

Held annually on the second Saturday of December, we join thousands of other volunteers to place over 20,000 wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery to honor our fallen veterans during the holiday season. This event is hosted by Wreaths Across America (WAA), a non-profit dedicated to remembering, honoring, and teaching people about our fallen soldiers. We also volunteer with WAA in late January to assist in the clean-up of the wreaths. To learn more about Wreaths Across America, visit their website here
